Weddings Aren’t a Performance – They’re a Story

A couple stands at an outdoor wedding altar adorned with orange flowers at The Lakes. Guests are seated on either side, and an officiant holds a book nearby. The trees and sunlight of Low Hall create a serene backdrop for this intimate celebration.

The Pressure of the Perfect Wedding

We’re living in an age where algorithms shape what we see, what we think we should want, and even how we believe we should celebrate milestones like weddings.

Social media is flooded with styled shoots, glossy editorials, and carefully curated content. It’s beautiful — but it can also be overwhelming. Couples often feel like their day has to perform for Instagram or TikTok.

And honestly? I hate the performance of it all. Weddings were never meant to be staged productions. They’re real, messy, joyful, chaotic, emotional — and that’s where the true magic is.

If you’re looking for inspiration that’s real rather than performed, take a look at some of the weddings I’ve photographed — honest, candid, and full of life. The Backlash Is Growing

Lately, more and more people are questioning this. Why should your wedding feel like a stage show? Why should the happiest day of your life feel like it has to measure up to a feed curated by algorithms?

I see couples pushing back, reclaiming their day for themselves rather than for the approval of strangers online. From huge celebrations in cathedrals to tiny elopements in the middle of nowhere, the best weddings I’ve photographed all had one thing in common: the couple focused on each other, not the performance.

If you’re planning something simple or stripped-back, you might enjoy my piece on winter weddings — proof that atmosphere and story matter more than trends.

My Approach: True to You

As a photographer, my heart is in documentary storytelling. I don’t want you performing for my camera, for your guests, or for the internet. I want you to feel free to just be yourselves — messy, joyful, tearful, completely human.

99.99% of my couples come to me because they want their photos to feel like them. Not staged, not forced, not designed for social media. Just honest storytelling that captures the fleeting moments: the belly laughs, the quiet looks, the hands held under the table when nobody’s watching.

That’s the story of you. And it’s far more powerful than any staged trend.

Weddings Aren’t Content

Your wedding isn’t “content.” It’s not a performance. It’s not for likes, shares, or algorithms.

It’s a chapter in your life story.

Years from now, you won’t care how many likes it got. You’ll care about the photos that make you feel it all over again.

If you’d like to see more of those kinds of moments, have a look at my portfolio galleries.

The Beauty of Authenticity

The most beautiful weddings I’ve photographed weren’t the ones that followed Pinterest checklists or TikTok trends — they were the ones that embraced authenticity.

The couples who laughed when things went off-script. The couples who ditched the performance and leaned into being fully present.

That’s what creates unforgettable photographs.

A Gentle Reminder

So, if you’re planning your wedding, here’s your reminder:

  • It doesn’t have to be perfect.
  • It doesn’t have to perform.
  • It just has to be you.

And that’s always more than enough.

If that sounds like the kind of wedding photography you’d like, get in touch here — I’d love to tell your story.
