I’m Josh, a documentary wedding photographer based in Sheffield, photographing weddings across South Yorkshire, the Peak District and beyond.
For more than 15 years, I’ve photographed weddings by watching what’s happening rather than constantly trying to create it. The hugs, nerves, ridiculous dance moves and all the little things happening around you while you’re busy getting married.
Your wedding doesn’t need to become a photoshoot to have brilliant photographs of it.

Most of the day, I’ll stay out of the way and document things as they happen.
There are times when a little organisation helps. I’ll keep your important family photographs moving, help when you need it and we can absolutely make some brilliant portraits together. I just don’t think any of those things should take over the wedding.
Because the photographs matter, but so does actually being there for it.
Documentary Wedding Photography in Sheffield
My approach is roughly 95% documentary and 5% portraits.
That 95% is your wedding as it actually happened. Your friends, family, reactions, conversations, nerves, laughter and whatever chaos unfolds in between.
The other 5% gives us a little time to create something together. Nothing overly posed or uncomfortable and certainly not an hour-long photoshoot. Just relaxed portraits of the two of you that still feel like you.
What to Expect
You won’t spend your wedding day being told where to stand or what to do.
For most of it, I’ll simply follow what’s happening and photograph it. I’ll get involved when you need me, help keep things moving when it matters and organise the handful of photographs that actually need organising.
If you want to head into Sheffield for some portraits, brilliant. If you’d rather stay with your guests and have a drink, that’s brilliant too.
There’s no fixed formula for how your wedding should look and no need to recreate moments for the camera. What you receive is genuine photography of the people you love and the day you actually had.

Sheffield Wedding Venues
One of the best things about photographing weddings in Sheffield is the variety. You can get married right in the middle of the city, choose one of its old industrial spaces or head towards the greener edges of Sheffield with the Peak District just beyond.
Here are a few Sheffield wedding venues worth exploring. As I photograph more weddings across the city, I’ll add real weddings and galleries so you can see what these places actually look like with people in them rather than just an empty room.
Sheffield Town Hall
Right in the middle of the city, Sheffield Town Hall is a great option for smaller weddings and couples who don’t want a traditional full-day celebration.
I offer dedicated one-hour coverage for ceremonies here, giving us enough time for the ceremony, family photographs and some relaxed portraits afterwards.

The Hide
The Hide is an independent Sheffield wedding venue with a relaxed, creative feel and plenty of freedom to make the space your own.
I know The Hide and the people behind it personally, which makes it one of the Sheffield venues I’m particularly looking forward to photographing more weddings at.
The Chimney House
The Chimney House sits in Kelham Island and offers something completely different from a traditional country-house wedding.
It’s an intimate industrial space that feels particularly at home in Sheffield and works brilliantly for couples planning a smaller city wedding.
The Mowbray
The Mowbray is another Kelham Island venue, combining Sheffield’s industrial heritage with a much more polished interior.
It’s a great option if you want a city wedding with plenty of character while keeping the day centred around one part of Sheffield.
Whirlowbrook Hall
Whirlowbrook Hall gives you a completely different side of Sheffield.
Sitting on the greener edge of the city with extensive grounds around the house, it gives you the feel of a country-house wedding without having to travel far from Sheffield.
Trafalgar Warehouse
Trafalgar Warehouse is right in Sheffield city centre and leans into the city’s industrial character rather than trying to hide it.
It’s a flexible space that suits couples who want to put their own stamp on their wedding rather than fit everything into a traditional wedding venue.

Am I the Right Wedding Photographer for You?
We’ll probably get along well if:
- You want natural photographs of your friends and family being themselves.
- Spending time with the people you invited matters more than spending an hour posing for photographs.
- You want your wedding documented honestly, including the ridiculous bits as well as the beautiful ones.
- You want some great portraits together, but you don’t want your wedding to become a photoshoot.
- You’d rather enjoy what’s happening than constantly wonder where the camera is.
- You want someone experienced enough to step in when needed and disappear into the background when not.
- You don’t mind if things don’t go exactly to plan. Sometimes that’s where the best photographs come from.
- You want photographs that actually feel like your wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions
We’re awkward in front of the camera. Will you help us?
Absolutely. Most people I photograph aren’t used to having a camera pointed at them, and you don’t need to know how to pose.
For the documentary parts of the day, there’s nothing for you to do at all. When we take a few portraits together, I’ll give you enough direction that you don’t feel abandoned in front of the camera, without trying to force you into poses that don’t feel like you.

Do we need to spend ages away from our guests for photographs?
Definitely not.
One of the biggest reasons I photograph weddings the way I do is so you can actually be at your wedding. We’ll organise the important family group photographs efficiently and, if you’d like some portraits together, we can keep them relaxed and relatively short.
You don’t need to disappear for an hour to have great wedding photographs.
How long will it take to receive our wedding photographs?
Most couples receive their finished wedding gallery within around four weeks.
I deliberately limit myself to 35 weddings a year. It means I can give each wedding the time it deserves rather than photographing as many as possible and building up a huge editing backlog.
I work through each wedding carefully and will always keep you updated if there’s likely to be a longer wait.
How do you prefer to communicate?
Email is usually best for anything important because it keeps all of your wedding plans together in one place and gives us both something to refer back to.
I’m always happy to have a phone or video call when it would be easier to talk something through.
Can we print our photographs?
Absolutely. You’ll receive your finished photographs in high resolution and you’re welcome to download and print them yourself.
You can also order professional prints and albums directly through your online gallery. For longer wedding coverage, you’ll have £100 print credit to put towards them.

Do you only photograph weddings in Sheffield?
Not at all. I’m based in Sheffield and photograph weddings throughout South Yorkshire and the Peak District, but I still travel across the UK for weddings too.

How do we book you for our wedding?
Start by getting in touch and telling me a little about what you’re planning.
I’ll check your date, we’ll talk through the coverage that makes sense for your wedding and, if you’d like to go ahead, I’ll send everything over online. Once the contract is signed and your booking fee is paid, the date is yours.
I photograph a maximum of 35 weddings each year, so if you think we might be a good fit, it’s always worth checking your date as soon as you know it.
