Whether you’re proposing on a dramatic gritstone edge, beside a peaceful reservoir or during a scenic walk together, my approach is always the same: helping the proposal feel completely personal while documenting it exactly as it happened.

Planning Your Proposal is Simpler Than You Think

Most people have never planned a proposal before, so don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start. I’ll guide you through the whole process, helping everything feel relaxed from your first message through to the moment you get down on one knee.

2. Choose the perfect location

I’ll help you find somewhere that suits the two of you, whether that’s an iconic Peak District viewpoint, a quiet woodland walk or somewhere a little more off the beaten track.

3. Plan the details

We’ll chat through timings, parking, weather, meeting points and all the little details that help keep everything a surprise.

4. The proposal

I’ll already be in position before you arrive, photographing everything discreetly while you focus on the moment itself.

5. Celebrate together

After you’ve had time to enjoy those first few moments together, I’ll introduce myself and we’ll spend around 20–30 minutes creating relaxed photographs while you’re still soaking it all in.

How I Capture a Surprise Proposal

There are three main approaches to photographing a proposal — though I’m always open to new ideas if you have something unique in mind. The more personal the plan, the more meaningful the photos will be.

Hidden & Discreet

The most straightforward — and often the favourite.

I’ll arrive ahead of time, position myself carefully, and stay out of sight until the moment you go down on one knee. This works beautifully at iconic spots like Stanage Edge, Curbar Edge, or within the grounds of a romantic Peak District hotel or reservoir.

Once the excitement settles, we can take a relaxed set of couple portraits to celebrate your new engagement.

Portrait Session with a Twist

This starts as what looks like a simple couple photoshoot — until you choose the perfect moment to propose.


It’s a fantastic option if you’d like to combine portraits with the big surprise, while also keeping your partner completely unsuspecting. I’ll guide you both through a natural, fun session, then step back when you’re ready, giving you space for the proposal itself while still capturing every reaction.

Less common, but sometimes couples prefer to recreate their proposal in a more staged or styled way.


This could be because the original proposal was private, or you’d like to include friends, family, or even a styled setup with flowers, a picnic, or pets. Whatever the reason, I’ll help you retell your proposal story in a way that feels natural and meaningful to you both.

How Much Does Proposal Photography Cost?

Most surprise proposals are covered by my introductory Peak District price of £300 (usually £350).

That includes planning beforehand, discreet proposal photography, relaxed portraits afterwards and your edited images delivered through a private online gallery.

Sunrise or sunset gives the most flattering light and the quietest locations. Weekdays are usually best for avoiding crowds.

Can you help me plan the location?
Absolutely! I’ll recommend spots that fit your vision, whether that’s a dramatic mountain edge or a quiet forest clearing.

What if the weather is bad?
This is the Peak District — sometimes moody weather creates the best photo. While I can’t promise a perfect sunset, careful planning increases the chance of success. We’ll always have backup options in case of heavy rain.

Can you stay hidden so my partner doesn’t notice?
Yes! I’ll blend in, often pretending to be a landscape photographer until the big moment.

New Scenery, Seasoned Storyteller

You might have noticed that my current proposal portfolio is filled with stunning Lake District moments rather than the Peaks. That’s because I’ve been photographing proposals and weddings in Cumbria for over 15 years, and the Lakes have been my home base. You can see more here: Lake District Proposal Photography.

But here’s the exciting part: I’ve recently moved to the Peak District, and I’m bringing all of that experience with me. New scenery, seasoned storyteller.

A Surprise View Proposal in the Peak District

When Ruairí first got in touch, he had just a few days to plan the perfect proposal. His original idea was to ask Sophie to marry him at nearby Lawrence Field, but after scouting both locations on the day, we agreed that Surprise View offered the quieter setting and spectacular scenery they were hoping for.

To keep everything a surprise, we planned everything discreetly beforehand. As they arrived at the viewpoint, Sophie had no idea what was about to happen.

Moments later, Ruairí got down on one knee.

She said yes.

Rather than turning the afternoon into a long photoshoot, we simply documented those first few minutes together as they naturally unfolded. Later, Ruairí told me they loved how the photographs reflected the genuine emotion of the moment, something that means a huge amount to me as a documentary photographer.

An Owler Tor Proposal in the Peak District

When Josh first got in touch, he and Ezgi were travelling around the UK with her family, and he knew this was the trip he wanted to propose on. Together, we planned everything carefully, choosing the quieter surroundings of Owler Tor for its beautiful views and relaxed walk.

There was one extra detail that made the proposal even more personal.

Their one-year-old German Shepherd, Shelby, carried the engagement ring in a small pouch attached to her collar, becoming an unforgettable part of the surprise. As they reached the viewpoint, Josh got down on one knee while nearby walkers quietly realised what was happening, breaking into applause as Ezgi said yes.

Afterwards, we spent some time exploring the surrounding rocks and taking a few relaxed photographs, giving them the chance to soak up those first moments together without turning it into a long photoshoot.
