Castleton & Edale Wedding Venues & Elopement Guide

|
A bride and groom stand on a rocky ledge overlooking rolling green hills under a cloudy sky with patches of blue.

Castleton and Edale sit in the western end of Hope Valley in the northern Peak District, within Derbyshire, and this is where the landscape starts to feel properly dramatic.

If Hope Valley is the accessible side of the Peaks, Castleton and Edale are where it leans more into the wild — ridgelines, steep valleys, and wide open views that feel a bit more untouched.

For weddings and elopements, this area suits couples who want something more outdoors-led. It’s less about traditional venues and more about the landscape shaping the day.

Couples usually choose Castleton and Edale if they want:

  • Big, iconic Peak District scenery
  • A slightly more adventurous feel
  • Quiet moments away from busier areas (if timed right)
  • A mix of village charm and dramatic backdrops

WHERE IS CASTLETON & EDALE & WHAT COUNTS AS IT?

Castleton and Edale sit within Derbyshire, in the north-western part of the Peak District (Dark Peak).

The area typically includes:

  • Castleton
  • Edale
  • Mam Tor
  • The Great Ridge
  • Kinder Scout
  • Winnats Pass

Rough radius: 5–8 miles

This is also the start of the Pennine Way, so it’s one of the most well-known walking areas in the UK.

WHY IS IT CALLED CASTLETON & EDALE?

Castleton takes its name from Peveril Castle, a Norman fortress that still overlooks the village today.

Edale comes from Old English, meaning “the valley of Eda”, referring to early settlement land.

LANDSCAPE & NATURAL BEAUTY

This is some of the most recognisable terrain in the Peak District.

You’ve got:

  • Limestone valleys like Winnats Pass
  • Gritstone ridges like Mam Tor and the Great Ridge
  • High moorland plateau across Kinder Scout

It feels bigger, steeper, and more dramatic than most areas.

Light here is constantly changing:

  • Mist often sits in the valleys in the morning
  • Sunlight moves quickly across the ridges
  • Even overcast conditions add mood and depth
