A Surprise Proposal at Owler Tor Peak District

When Josh first got in touch, I knew this was going to be a proposal to remember.

He and his partner, Ezgi, were travelling around the UK with her family, staying in Airbnbs and exploring some of the country’s most beautiful places. Somewhere along the journey, he wanted to ask one very important question, but there was one extra twist. Their one-year-old German Shepherd, Shelby, was going to be part of the proposal.

The plan was simple. While Ezgi took in the view, her parents would quietly attach the engagement ring to Shelby’s collar before letting her run over. As she arrived, Josh would get down on one knee.

I loved the idea from the moment he told me.

Originally, the proposal was going to happen somewhere in the Lake District while they were staying near Cockermouth, but after chatting through their travel plans together, we realised there might be an even better option. Their road trip from the Yorkshire Dales towards the Forest of Dean took them straight through the Peak District, giving them the perfect excuse to stop somewhere beautiful without making the proposal feel suspicious.

We looked at a few locations together, including Curbar Edge, Ladybower Reservoir and Surprise View. Curbar Edge has incredible views, but with Shelby carrying the ring we both felt somewhere with a little more open space would be a better choice. Eventually we settled on Owler Tor, just a short walk from the Surprise View car park, and it couldn’t have suited their plans any better.

One thing people don’t always see is everything that happens behind the scenes before a proposal. Around an hour before Josh and Ezgi arrived, I headed over to Owler Tor to choose the exact spot. Rather than simply finding the best view, I wanted somewhere a little quieter, somewhere Shelby would have plenty of room to run safely, and somewhere I could photograph everything naturally without being noticed.

Meanwhile, traffic around Manchester and charging stops for their electric car meant their ETA kept changing throughout the afternoon. Thankfully we’d stayed in touch throughout the journey, with regular WhatsApp updates and live location sharing allowing us to adapt the plan as the day unfolded. That’s one of the things I love about photographing proposals; no matter what happens, it’s all about keeping things relaxed so the couple never feel rushed.

Eventually I spotted them making their way across the rocks and quietly got into position. A few moments later, Shelby came bounding over exactly as planned with the engagement ring attached to her collar. Josh dropped to one knee and Ezgi’s reaction was everything he’d hoped for—complete surprise, plenty of laughter and a few happy tears before she said yes.

What made the moment even more special was everyone else around them. A handful of walkers nearby quietly realised what was happening and stopped to watch from a distance, while others sitting on the surrounding rocks broke into applause and cheers as soon as Ezgi said yes. It’s one of those lovely things that seems to happen during proposal sessions. Complete strangers become part of the celebration for a few moments, sharing in a memory they’ll probably never forget.

After giving Josh and Ezgi some time to enjoy the moment together, we wandered around Owler Tor creating some relaxed engagement photographs while making the most of the incredible Peak District scenery. We also captured a few photographs with Ezgi’s family, who had helped keep the proposal a secret from the very beginning, before Shelby once again stole the spotlight. After all, she’d played one of the most important role of the day.

Why Choose Owler Tor for a Proposal?


Owler Tor is one of my favourite proposal locations in the Peak District, and after photographing Josh and Ezgi’s proposal it’s easy to see why. Sitting just a short walk from the Surprise View car park, it offers dramatic gritstone rock formations, panoramic views across the Derbyshire countryside and enough space to find a quiet spot away from the busiest paths.


Unlike some of the nearby edges, Owler Tor feels a little more relaxed while still offering incredible scenery. That made it the perfect choice for this proposal, especially with Shelby carrying the engagement ring, as there was plenty of room for everything to unfold naturally without anyone feeling close to steep drops.


Another thing I love about Owler Tor is how varied it is. Within a few minutes’ walk you can photograph amongst the rocks, enjoy open moorland views and capture the sweeping landscapes that make the Peak District so special. It means couples can simply enjoy the moment without feeling like they’re being marched from one location to another.


Like anywhere in the Peak District, weekends and sunny afternoons can be busy, but with a little planning it’s usually possible to find quieter moments. That’s one of the reasons I always arrive early, keep in touch throughout the day and adapt plans if needed. Every proposal is different, and sometimes those small adjustments make all the difference.
