The Woods - Couple Portrait Sessions
Since moving to Cumbria over 15 years ago; I have utterly fallen in love with the county. Not just The Lake District but the entire county. It is so diverse, with the landscape; it is honestly magical.
In my mind, I can split up the landscape around me into four categories: Lakes & Rivers, Mountains, Forests and the Coast. Sometimes, they can cross over each other, but that's just the stunning Cumbrian landscape showing off again.
It made sense to show you my couple portrait sessions in styles rather than individual blogs, so please scroll below and use the navigation links to fast-forward to any particular portrait session you want to see.
This page is dedicated to all the woodland and forest couple portraits and adventures around Cumbria & The Lake District.

Kim & Dans Wetheral Woods Wander
A few weeks before Dan & Kim's wedding day we headed to Wetheral Woods, along the river Eden for a couple portrait session. As always we chatted about the upcoming day and plans as well as having a right laugh and slipping over in some mud! thankfully the white trainers survived just fine.
The path follows along the river Eden from Wetheral to Armathwaite, where their wedding day was being hosted. While we didn't walk that far we did have a ratch around the local small caves, found a weird tin barn that was falling and had a laugh while creating some great photos.
Having photographed these two beauts before and having known them both for a few years they were natural infront of the camera. We refreshed some basic posing and cracked on with the adventure!
The Great Grayrigg Adventure
Needless to say, Lauren and Scott are both rather beautiful and, even if they don't believe it, natural in front of the camera! The location of choice was Grayrigg, a small village near Kendal just outside of the Lake District. It is in fact where this stunning couple are going to say their vows in the very near future! They're both natural adventures and so the great Grayrigg adventure began.
After a small chat and a sneaky look in the church, we ventured down a small side road to some open hills full of cattle. Obviously, I decided we should go for a walk where seemingly the most amount of cow poo was... (sorry not sorry). I explained how the 5 basic poses worked and we went through each one. After 5 minutes these guys were absolute pros!
We wandered along dried-up river beds and hopped over fences to find some rather cool woodlands with logged trees and overgrown grass under which we found some old cars seemingly abandoned! Frickin cool right?! Well, me being me I instantly said we should get on top of them.. and these crazy kids were well up for it! I honestly cannot wait for their upcoming wedding day at Grayrigg and then into the lakes as its just going to be stunning!
Autumnal Woodland Couple Portrait Session - Anna & Lee
Well, Today we had great fun in the autumnal woodlands by the shore of Derwent Water. Anna & Lee are engaged to be married in only a few months so it was a perfect opportunity for a couples portrait session.
We ventured around the grounds of The Lingholm Estate with all of its gorgeous autumnal woodlands turning colours and muddy paths. We spent 15 minutes just talking and wandering, getting to know each other a little bit more before I started to explain some basic poses and just how easy they really are. Within another few minutes, we were messing around giggling and laughing at the oddities of life… and some slapstick near falls by all of us in the mud.
We also ventured around talking about the wedding plans and what the day is going to be like. I honestly cannot wait for their big day at Armathwaite hall it Is going to be an absolute hoot with some secrets planned here and there too!
One thing that shone throughout though was just how much these guys adore each other. Honestly, it’s infectious to be around these two! They’re just so happy and smiley and lovely. Anyway, that’s enough of my rambling… have a look at the photos below!
Jack & Lauren Gelt Wood Dog Walk
Part of living in Carlisle is getting to enjoy all the amazing places around us, like gelt woods only a few miles away. It's a fave location for Lauren, Jack & 10 year old Theo, possibly the most energetic 10-year-old spaniel I have ever met, naturally he stole the show!
Jack & Lauren are getting married at Gretna with friends and family watching and supporting them all the way. Like most couples, they were a little nervous about wedding photos so a Couple Portrait Session seemed like a great idea to not only help settle some nerves but also to show and practice some basic posing before the big wedding day.
Couple portraits are soooo useful for things like this as it not only helps calm any worries but it just means we get to know each other even more than before and practicing how to pose and what it's like in front of the camera speeds up portraits on the day itself meaning.. more time for drinking and dancing!

Low Wood Bay Woodland Wander
Low Wood Bay is an incredible venue I am lucky enough to work at while documenting weddings. I, however, and neither had Lauren or Arron, ever wandered along the back footpaths for an adventure. Not until today that was anyway! What an utter gem of woodland we found!
As always my couple portrait sessions are crazy laid back and a chance to talk about the upcoming wedding day and address any nerves the couple may have about the day with regards to photography. We practise and learn some basic posing and how to relax in front of the camera as well so that on the wedding day itself, which for this duo will be at Low Wood Bay, we can capture amazing photos quickly but also in a relaxed manner. We don't need any more stress or nerves!
"We were so nervous to have our photos taken as neither of us like being in front of the camera but Josh made it so easy and comfortable for us! We’re feeling so much better about the big day now! Roll on the wedding! "
Arron and Lauren have been together for 8 years now, and 4 years ago Arron proposed at the firework display at Laurens's favourite place in the whole wide world - Disney world!
They looked at a couple of different venues but fell in love with Low Wood straight away and found a new favourite place to visit when in the Lake District! Whilst they were due to get married last year at Low Wood Bay the dreaded Covid ruined the initial plans.
A Forest Trail Couple Portrait Session
You may recognise these absolute beauts as they have appeared on my website a few times! Firstly way back at Becky & Robs Long Martin Wedding! Then on one of my first ever couple portrait sessions at a hidden waterfall! Click the link to see that! Also, you saw them at Becky & Richards wedding!
Crazy huh?! Well, they're back again, this time though they're engaged! YAY! and I'm happy to say I'm photographing their upcoming wedding day as well. We decided to do another photo shoot but this time with a forest woodland feel rather than the epic waterfall from before!
The shoot itself was at Hamsterley Forest as that was roughly in the middle for us all to travel for and it was a pretty cool place! it's full of forest trails to get lost down, open meadows and some rather nice big logs... It was great fun and I cannot wait for their epic wedding day!
Whinlatter Forest Couple Portrait Session
Katy and Glen recently won a Couple Portrait Session on one of my Facebook Giveaways! For their shoot, we went to Whinlatter Forest! Although, I wish I knew about the diversion... Fun times! Katy & Glen drove over from Durham for the shoot with their young puppy Buzz! While they don't live in the Lake District they do travel over frequently in search of adventure.
They both met while at university together and have been inseparable ever since. In 2016 they said their vows and started their life as a married couple. Walking around with these guys made me truly appreciate their story and what they have gone through. It was amazing the sense, being in the now, and, accepting life's moments for what they are. Alongside the courage and strength to carry on. I genuinely was moved by their story and came away feeling almost enlightened to a way of thinking.
Couple Portrait Session at Whinlatter Forest
Beccie & Chris are a wonderful couple, Beccie is a Cumbria based graphic designer, whose work you can see here. Chris, on the other hand, is a lecturer, who used to work at Whinlatter Forest keeping an eye on all the grounds and the trees, and man... He loves a tree!
They have been together for 18 years and have been married for nearly 10 years, true childhood sweethearts! It wasn't love at first sight mind, although they were in the same form in their first year of secondary school. As Chris was a "farmer type" and Beccie was deemed a "townie" ended up having their own Romeo and Juliet story. Needless to say, the hostility didn't last long and slowly their friendship and the relationship grew.
As always we walked and talked a little as not to jump right into the shoot, it's a great way to calm everyone down find out what they like and don't like and to get a sense of who they are as a couple. Without doing this these photos just wouldn't represent the awesome couple that they are. We went through the 5 basic poses that are in every magazine ever and how to smash them out of the park.
From there we let Chris tell us his old stomping ground and we started our adventure! The results are below, and I just adore them! Anyway, check out the photos below and If you would like to have a couples portrait session with myself, or even have me photograph your big day, then please do get in touch.
University Love Story Couple Portrait Session
I have known of Zoe and Peter for what now seems like an eternity. Their University love story started while in freshers 7 years ago and they are honestly inseparable. To tell you the truth, I don’t think the world would have it any other way, they're just made for each other. Zoe was a year below me as she studied photography at the University of Cumbria, at the same time Peter was studying film and media. To say I wasn't a little nervous about photographing a talented couple, with the certificates to prove it, is an understatement!
I am truly honoured to photograph this couples upcoming wedding next September after a few years of not being in touch as life gets in the way and everyone takes us all in different directions. It was a real surprise to see Zoe & Petes names in an enquiry email. It was a flash from the past and the start of reconnecting friendships.
Apparently, I was the only photographer they wanted and thankfully I was available for their big day. However, Both not being wholly confident in front of the camera (I think that's just a photographers thing? I hate being in front of the lens!) I suggested a couple portrait session to ease any nerves and also to catch up on a few years worth of craic!
As always we walked and talked about the upcoming wedding day and general musings in life like the “Good old Uni days” with the highs and lows that brought. Walking around the beautiful Gelt Woods it was almost tangible feeling of nerves disappearing and the real Zoe & Peter coming to life while we sometimes scrabbled up and over hills and down rocky stone steps.
Well, I think I have said enough right about now and I'm going to let the photographs of this gorgeous couple do the rest of the talking. If you would like to have a couples portrait session with myself, or even have me photograph your big day, then please do get in touch.
Couple Portrait Session at Muncaster Castle
Muncaster Castle is one of my featured venues here on my website and it is the stunning location for Bethan & Michaels upcoming wedding. We walked around the vast grounds of the castle while talking about all things random and having a laugh in which I found out that they are both super competitive!
We walked and talked to get them used to being around the camera and went through how easy the 5 basic poses for couples are and that there is nothing to be nervous about at all! We also played some simple games which turned mega competitive and even ended in a google search for animals beginning with the letter "X"... It's harder than you think!
It's not rare to hear jokes about "puppy love" or "teenage fancies" but these guys are here to prove others wrong. They first met at school when they were 15. At the age of 17 they started becoming more than just friends and now years later they are to become husband and wife! Honestly, these guys are so on the same page it's amazing. Just watching how they look, laugh and hold each other is incredible to watch and a wonderful thing to witness.
Weddings at this fantastic venue are beautiful and I cannot wait for Bethan and Michaels big day as it is going to be a gorgeous day from what they have planned (seriously Michael, can we play a game of cricket?). Muncaster Castle, home of the Pennington family for over 800 years, is one of the most majestic settings for any celebration. Set in 77 acres of woodland and gardens against the backdrop of the Western Lake District fells, these idyllic surroundings provide a wedding venue to die for. It is easy to describe why Ruskin described it as the “gateway to paradise.”
